Peruvian Artisan Home Decor- Edmundo Contreras Born in Apurimac, Peru in 1965, Edmundo Contreras Aquise works in the andahuaylino (Andahuaylas) style. He uses painted glass and crackled finishes in a technique that is both traditional and modern. "I've exhibited my work at arts and crafts fairs, and in 1995 took first place in the Concurso Internacional para América Latina y el Caribe, winning the UNESCO Prize. Also one of my proudest moments was receiving the Vizcardo & Guzmán Medal as a master artisan, awarded by the Peruvian Congress in 2002". "My art strives to be a testimony to history and tradition. With the danger of extinction of certain art forms, I represent them in hand-painted wood, glass and ceramic. "My dream is for my art to be known and appreciated all over the world." ABOUT REVERSE HAND-PAINTED GLASS In the XV Century, glass arrived in Peru brought by the Spaniards in the form of mirrors and picture frames destined to decorate churches, convents and houses of the time. Also, they brought beads from Murano, an Italian island next to Venice, where the greatest production of glass and crystal, between the XVIII and XIX, took place. The Spanish technique of stained glass windows, of great Arab influence, were copied and modified by Peruvian craftsmen. They developed new regional styles, such as the andahuaylino (reverse-painted glass frames), the cajamarquino (thoroughly painted glass), the Cusco style (carved wood frames that include painted glass), the mixed style or cuscaja (using gold leaf on the carved picture frames and on painted glass) and the polychrome style (using multiple multicolored hues). These styles can be observed in museum collections, in decoration of church altars and convents of different regions of the Perú. I absolutely love this mirror. Unfortunately it didn’t fit in the spot I had in mind. So I contacted the company to initiate a return. They do not take returns. It’s too expensive for them so they offered to give me part of my money back and told me to keep the mirror. They were very nice and communicative.
